What type of building is cheaper to build – log house or wooden frame
house?
There is no exact answer to that question. The total cost of the
bulding coukd be similar. The most important is to know what is needed
because these types are different in outlook and in construction. Of
course there is differences in thickness of the walls for both types,
which give the price difference.
What diameter of the log is enough for saunas and living
houses?
The regulations in each country are different. Generaly for block house
is enough with 150 mm of isolation. For log house if it is sauna house
or summer house, diameter 18 and 20 are suitable. For living houses –
20 or 22 cm are suitable.
What kind of basement is necessary for log houses and frame
houses?
It is possible to base the buldings on to pole type pasement if these
concrete poles are made according to house, but the monst suitable
would be normal basement under each wall minimum 250 -300 mm wide.
Is the raw wood material coming from Latvia or somewhere
else?
Yes, all 100% of raw material stock are coming from Latvia.
What type of finishing ir suitable for log house
homes?
The best is not to use any chemicals agains fungi, because most of them
more or less contain nonecological parts. Using the right bulding
technology and final use of the log house (ventilation) there should
not be problems with fungi. The best material for inside covering would
be oil ar water bases varnishes. From outside to protect the wood from
the sun and athmosphere special varnishes should be used, „Pinotex” for
example or for better ecological result water based outside varnishes.
What kind of wood do You use for
bulding?
For the log house walls spruce (white wood) or pine (red wood) is used.
Same species for the constructions. For the sauna rooms finishings we
use aspen or black alder planed tonged and grooved boards. All bulding
materials are dried until 18 % of moisture content.
What should be taken care of when using log
house?
Using the log house even if it is made from dried log, you have to know
that because of differences in air moisture wood can change its
dimmensions. That means the whole house can „sink” (especialy right
after the building) and lift. Sinking of the huouse does not allow to
put the furniture up to the ceiling or screw any interior elements to
the wall which do not allow vertical movement of the wall. The most
important thing is ventilation, especialy ventilation of wet rooms
(saunas, showers, kitchens). Ventilation can be done by regular
ventilation through windows or special equipment.
How much does the log house „sinks”?
If not dried log is used the log house walls „sink” about 4 – 6 cm per
each meter. If dryied log used, sinking still is possible up until 1 cm
per 1 m. The walls keep react depending of the season moister long
years after mounting.
